This research is funded by the Hinkley Center for Solid and Hazardous Waste Management (www.hinkleycenter.org) study examines current limitations to combustion residue reuse in Florida, as well as investigates possible pathways to facilitate the recycling of these materials. The end goal is to outline practical steps needed to foster combustion residue recycling or to evaluate whether such recycling should be a desired practice in Florida’s future.
Specific project objectives include:
- Compiling and critically assessing the state of science and practice with regard to the recycling of combustion residues,
- Forming a working group of experts and foster a dialogue (through face to face meetings) concerning the current status and future of combustion residual recycling in Florida,
- Collecting additional research data to assess fundamental questions regarding the potential for combustion residual recycling (as appropriate based on critical data gaps identified in the meeting objective 1 and based on feedback from the working group), and
- Producing a white paper that summarizes the research and the consensus of the working group, including recommendations for practical future steps needed to foster combustion residual recycling or to evaluate whether such recycling should be a desired practice in Florida.
The first working group meeting was held on February 1, 2012 at the University of Florida Hilton Conference Center. The working group consisted of 18 attendees representing the UF Solid Waste Research Team, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the waste combustion and coal power generation industries, and engineering consultants who work closely in the field of solid waste residual management. (meeting minutes, slides).
Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 16, inn Gainesville at the UF TREEO Center (direction –> http://www.treeo.ufl.edu/Locations.aspx). The meeting will start at 10 a.m. and go until 2 p.m. Agenda.
